I have a question about sweeping kicks. Specifically in the pattern Sam IL move 16, and Moon Moo moves 49 and 52. Are the direction or sweeping motion of these kicks going from outside to Inside, or are they going  from out in front of you, sweeping back toward yourself?

Respectfully

Hello sir.

Outside to inside is what I get from it. The target is the outside ankle joint. Also, on a Legacy video I see President Choi demonstrating this to Mr. Mike Morningstar and it looks like it's done outside to inside.

Just my observation.

Dr. Szostek,

Since the side sole is the attacking tool outside to inside makes more sense. I would think out in front back would result in more of your heel doing the work - making it more like foot tackling. Just my opinion though. :>)

Mr. Malefyt

For some reason I remember being taught that sweeping is more effective when you come from behind the attacker and pull / sweep his foot toward yourself, and that it is much harder to sweep some one from outside to inside. Most of all I just want to make sure I am doing the sweeping correct in the patterns.

Dr. Szostek,

Just my opinion...sweeping with just your leg is hard in the first place. Sweeps and foot tackling work best when you use your upper body to facilitate the sweeping/throwing motion.

In Moon -Moo both sweeping kicks follow a hand attack - perhaps 1 application could be that each of the hand attacks has stunned your attacker making it easier to perform the sweeping kick? Just a thought.

I think a lot needs to be taken into consideration though - like the body position of the attacker, being able to use your hands or not, starting off by striking first, and so on

Let me know what you think,

Nick
