Hi everybody.
I am currently preparing for my 3rd degree (spring 2010) and have upped my training schedule to 6 days on/1 day off and repeat.
My question is this: I am becoming more and more interested in body building and I am using a split routine for the 6 days on in the morning with cardio in the evenings.
Studying the TKD manual under Dosoo Dallyon it states that " calisthenics are far more beneficial that weightlifting"
So, am I by lifting heavier and heavier weights actually slowing down my Taekwon Do techniques? and will it inhibit my range of motion?
Any feedback on body building and Taekwon Do, benefits or disadvantages would be most appreciated.
Thank you and Taekwon

Nope. Taking up some body building will not hinder nor distrupt. It will actually improves your techniques, power, flexibility. As for me, the techiques used had been faster and powerful in motion.

Do lots of full situps with no back support where your only support is your abdominal. Variants of bench press, variants of bicep and triceps, variants of squats, etc. to start you off.

More importantly, do more repetitions by challenging yourself to exceed your limit. Hope this helps. :) Cheers!

Thank you for your response.
I have noticed a marked change in stamina and power since taking up body building, especially in power breaking. My reps are quite low (6-8) as I am lifting quite heavy weights (40kg bench press and 50 kg for squats, heavy for a lady!)
I am including "the plank" in between sets or a pattern of choice. Do you take any supplements ie. protein or creatine? I have been taking both but they seem to repeat on me during class.
thank you.

Gosh! 40kg bench press and 50 kg for squats. I'm happy for you with your increased in power and stamina. :) I'm taking 30kg bench press only but with slow repetitions of 10 for 10 sets.

Nope. Didn't take any supplements though. Still, I'm feeling good. :)

All the best in your training. :)

no,not at all! my old knees used to be quite stiff until a Physio suggested I needed to increase the musculature around my knees as my right knee was misaligned. So I started squats with 25kg and have increased to 50kg with great results! How did your 3rd degree grading go? I will be grading for mine next year ;-) Was destruction part of your grading and if so what types of breaks did you perform?

my tendons that attach to my knee caps are misaligned also! I really suffer with my knees and they even give way at times-esp when going up and down stairs.

My 3rd degree test went well i think, although we have not had our results yet.Should hope to have them within the next 7 days.
Yes destruction was part of our grading.I did 2 wooden boards front elbow.2 flying side kick left and right leg and 1 for reverse turning kick on a dangling air break. Broke them all except the air break. My head was out the game for this as i tried it (and failed) for my 2nd degree test, damaged my heel badly and could barely foot my foot down for 6 wks after! All i could think of was "oh god, this is gonna hurt!" !!!! lol

Hey good luck for your 3rd degree test nxt yr too!

Its not what you break, but how you break it!

Thanks Evan!

I'm sure you'll do fine on your 2nd degree test. And it doesn't matter how long it takes between gradings. All counts for experience!

Good luck all the same.
