Just a quick question for all you technical gurus, is the fist positioned vertically or horizontally when executing the crescent punches in Eui Am. My condensed Encyclopedia shows horizontal, and that is what I have always done, but I was corrected recently by a very senior Master to do it with the fist vertically???

Any thoughts please

Hi Mr Walkinshaw,

I was first taught it as being in a horizontal position but, quite recently we were told it had changed to a vertical position.

My instructor explained why. When it is executed horizontaly the two pinpoint attacking tools, the front two knuckles, do not meet with the target (say the temple) properly or accurately enough. Whereas, when the fist is turned to the vertical position, only the two front knuckles meet with the target, which is how it's meant to be when wanting to inflict maximum damage. However, the fist should not be fully vertical. It should have a slight angle or tilt, leaning the little finger knuckle away from the body, but only a slight angle.

My understanding is that this adjustment was introduced by the ITF Technical Committee. I hope this is correct and that it answers your query.
